If you caught my previous post on heartfelt Christmas journal prompts, then you already know how helpful it is to slow down and soak up the holidays. Those prompts are perfect for when you want to dig into your thoughts and feelings.
But sometimes you just want to capture something random that happened in the moment. A quote. An uplifting message. A funny joke your friend told you.
That's what this post is focused on. I'm sharing Christmas journaling ideas that help you jot down the magic in simple, flexible ways that fit into even the craziest December schedule.
Why Christmas Journaling Deserves a Spot in Your Holiday Traditions
Journaling during the Christmas season serves multiple purposes that extend far beyond simply recording events.
For many of us, the season holds both joy…and ache. Maybe you miss someone. Maybe money is tight. Maybe your year was wonderful and hard at the same time.
Putting those thoughts on paper can loosen that knot in your chest and help you relax.
On a very practical level, Christmas journaling can also:
- Help you see your priorities more clearly
- Give you a screen-free creative hobby (which I always recommend)
- Turn into a sweet family tradition or stay a sacred solo ritual that belongs only to you
No, I don’t think you need to write long essays to get these benefits. A few lines can get it done. Read on for some journaling ideas you can use this Christmas.
Creative Christmas Journaling Techniques
Prompts are really helpful, but I also recommend that you switch up how you journal to keep things interesting.
List Journaling
On days when a full paragraph is too much, make lists. For example…
- “25 things I love about December”
- Holiday gratitude lists
- Brainstorm lists for gift ideas, festive activities, or traditions you want to try
Lists are super-fast to write and easy to revisit later.
Letter Writing
Letters have a way of drawing out your deeper thoughts. Try writing...
- A letter to your future self to open next Christmas
- Letters to your children or partner about what you love about them
- A kind letter to your past self during a difficult Christmas, telling her what you know now
You can tuck letters into an envelope inside your journal or keep them right on the page.
Photo Journaling
Print a few photos during December and build entries around them.
- Choose one photo each week and write what was happening
- Create a spread with several photos from one event and jot down captions, quotes, and funny details
Yes, I want
the playbook!
One-line-a-day
If you’ve got way too much going on, go with the simplest method. Write one line each day in December.
Some examples…
“Tonight we drove around looking at lights and the kids argued over which house won.”
“I sat by the tree before everyone woke up and finally had some alone time.”
Themed Weekly Entries
You can also give each week of December a theme to keep your reflections focused. At the end of each week, write about how you noticed that theme in your life.
Week one: anticipation and preparation
Week two: traditions and togetherness
Week three: the main events and celebrations
Week four: reflection and looking ahead
Tips To Follow Through
Good intentions are great, but I want your Christmas journaling ideas to turn into a actual practice (not one more thing to feel guilty about).
Start Small on Purpose
Instead of promising yourself you will write every day, start with something simple.
- One prompt per week
- Five minutes per session
- A few lines on the days that you’re exhausted
Anchor Journaling to Something You Already Do
I love anchoring my activities! Pick an existing habit and connect your writing to it.
- Journal while you drink your morning coffee
- Write a few lines after everyone’s gone to bed
- Spend ten minutes on your journal on Sunday evenings while you plan your week
You're more likely to remember your journal when it is tied to a routine you already have.
Make it Fun
Let this practice be a treat, have some fun with it!
- Use pens and notebooks you genuinely like
- Light a candle or play soft Christmas music (I’ve fallen in love with slow jazz Christmas music)
- Choose prompts that interest you and skip any that are uninspiring
Involve Others (only if you want to)
You can keep your Christmas journal completely private, or you can invite people in.
- Have a family journaling time where everyone writes or draws one memory from the week
- Share one prompt with a friend and compare notes over text or voice messages
- Create a joint memory book with your partner, where you both write in the same notebook
There is something sweet about seeing the season through different eyes.
Give Yourself Grace
You will miss days. Life happens. December is really busy! But please know that never means you failed.
Simply open your journal again and start with the next prompt. Messy handwriting, crossed-out words, and random gaps all tell the truth about real life.
Your journal is here to serve you, not the other way around.
Turn Your Christmas Journal into a Keepsake
If you want your journal to become part of your yearly tradition, here are a few ideas.
- Tape in photos, gift tags, programs, cards, or children’s artwork
- Create a “year in review” page at the end of December with your highlights, lessons, and favorite memories
- Store your journal in a special box or on a shelf where you can pull it out each December
- Make a habit of reading a few entries from past years when the season rolls around
Do this long enough and you'll build a stack of Christmas journals that tell the story of your life, year by year.
