Two mugs of hot cocoa topped with marshmallows for a hot cocoa bar

A mug of hot cocoa with a chocolate covered marshmallow melting on top is my favorite winter treat. Mmmm!

That's why a hot cocoa bar is such a fun idea for a Christmas party. Guests make their own mug, kids go wild for the toppings, and all the jars and candy canes make the table so pretty.

Here are some neat ideas to help you set one up, from the cocoa itself to the little extras that make it fun.

Pick the Perfect Spot

A bar cart, kitchen island, sideboard or even a card table with a pretty cloth all work.

Choose a spot near an outlet (for the slow cooker) and away from the main food table, so the cocoa line doesn't block the appetizers. Leave room for guests to set down their mugs while they add toppings.

Make the Cocoa Low and Slow

Here's a lesson I learned the hard way. If you make hot cocoa on the stove, go nice and slow so it doesn't burn.

Yep, been there, done that. I burned a whole pot once and had to toss it!

Warm the milk over medium-low heat and stir often, or use a store-bought mix to save time. Then pour it into a slow cooker set to warm so it stays hot through the party.

Set Out a Mix of Mugs

Mismatched mugs make the bar so charming, so pull out every holiday mug you own.

For a big crowd, add paper cups with lids and sleeves. Guests can take one for the road, and you'll have fewer dishes at the end of the night.

Glass jar of marshmallows with a chalkboard label for a hot cocoa bar

The Marshmallow Station

This is the star of the show! Fill jars with a few kinds:

  • Mini marshmallows
  • Jumbo marshmallows
  • Peppermint or gingerbread flavored marshmallows
  • Chocolate covered marshmallows (my absolute favorite)

For chocolate covered marshmallows, try dipping jumbo marshmallows halfway in melted chocolate, add sprinkles and let them set on parchment paper. Drop one in your mug and watch it melt. Now I'm hungry!

Whipped Cream Two Ways

Keep a can of whipped cream in a bowl of ice for quick refills, and set out a bowl of homemade whipped cream for anyone who wants the good stuff.

Add a little peppermint extract or cinnamon to the homemade bowl for a fun twist.

Crushed Candy Canes and Peppermint

Put candy canes in a zip-top bag and crush them with a rolling pin. It's also a great job for little helpers.

Set out the crushed pieces in a bowl with a small spoon. A sprinkle on top of whipped cream is so festive.

Chocolate sauce drizzled over a mug of hot cocoa with marshmallows

Sauces and Drizzles

Line up squeeze bottles of chocolate syrup, caramel sauce and white chocolate sauce.

Guests can drizzle inside the mug before pouring or on top of the whipped cream. Salted caramel is a fun pick for the grown-ups.

Bowl of chocolate chips for hot cocoa bar toppings

Sprinkles and Fun Toppers

Fill small bowls with Christmas sprinkles, chocolate chips, toffee bits, crushed cookies and shaved chocolate.

Little dishes with tiny spoons keep things tidy, and the colors make the whole bar pop.

Stir Sticks with a Treat

Skip the plain spoons! Set out candy canes, cinnamon sticks, chocolate dipped spoons and peppermint sticks in a jar.

Want to make chocolate spoons ahead? Try dipping plastic spoons in melted chocolate, add sprinkles and chill until set.

Cinnamon sticks and star anise for hot cocoa flavor add-ins

Flavor Add-Ins

Give guests a few ways to change up their mug:

  • Peppermint extract
  • Cinnamon and a tiny pinch of cayenne for a Mexican hot chocolate
  • Nutella stirred in for a hazelnut cocoa
  • A spoonful of peanut butter
  • Orange zest with dark chocolate

Label each one so guests know what they're grabbing.

Hot Cocoa Bombs

Hot cocoa bombs are a fun surprise for guests. They're chocolate shells filled with cocoa mix and mini marshmallows.

Drop one in a mug, pour hot milk over the top and watch it burst open. Store-bought ones work great, or try making your own a few days ahead.

A Grown-Ups Corner

For an adult party, set aside a little corner with Baileys, peppermint schnapps, Kahlúa or whipped cream vodka.

Be sure to keep it on a separate tray with its own sign so guests can tell it apart from the kid-friendly mugs.

Cookies for Dipping

Set a plate of cookies right next to the mugs. Gingerbread men, biscotti, shortbread and Pirouette cookies are all perfect for dunking.

Pair the cocoa bar with a few of my Christmas appetizer ideas and you've got a full party menu.

Signs and Labels

A small chalkboard sign at the front of the bar adds a finished touch. Write "Hot Cocoa Bar" with a few quick steps: pick a mug, pour the cocoa, add your toppings.

Need a sweet saying for the sign? My Christmas messages and sayings are full of short ones that fit perfectly.

Mason jar of hot cocoa with marshmallows as a take-home party favor

Take-Home Cocoa Jars

End the night with a little party favor. Layer cocoa mix, mini marshmallows and crushed candy canes in small mason jars.

Tie on a ribbon and a tag with the directions. Guests love taking a bit of the party home.

These are also a great gift for a white elephant gift exchange!

  • Put a tray under the toppings to catch sprinkles and drips.
