I was browsing Pinterest to get some inspiration for journal pages…my goodness there are some very talented people out there. Their journals look like works of art that belong in a museum!
Die-cut stickers, collages, sketches, fabrics, you name it. Some had popups and foldouts. Gorgeous handwriting. LOTS of pink (I used to not like pink, but now I love it!).
And there some journals were…kinda plain looking. Nothing wrong with some good old fashioned black pen on white paper.
But when I looked closer at the content, they all had something in common.
They were all filled with ideas.
Favorite lyrics, places to travel, me as a perfume, books to read, my comfort movies, friends’ birthdays on a calendar of cakes. One even had a list of…lists. Like summer packing lists, winter packing lists, etc.
They were all unique, because each journal creator is unique. That’s the whole point though, that your journaling experience is for you, and the level of creativity you put into it is for you. Read on for some ideas on how to make your journal pages all about you.
Journal Pages
What are they? They’re just individual layouts inside your journal. Journal pages serve a specific purpose. Like organizing your to-do list, reflecting on your day, tracking your goals, etc.
As I noted above, they can be super basic, artsy, color-coded, or overloaded with stickers. That’s the beauty, you get to decide.
Creating journal pages is the sweet spot between fun and getting things done. You can let your inner control freak geek out over weekly layouts and still get lost in some gel pen mood tracking.
Here are some things you can do with your journal pages.
Daily Logs
This is where you log what happened each day, the minutiae. They hold your to-dos, random thoughts, grocery lists, and that quote you saw on Pinterest on and liked.
Weekly or Monthly Layouts
These layouts show your week or month at a glance. Super useful if you’re juggling work, projects, appointments, and a semi-functioning social life. I saw a journal page that had 12 pretty cakes, all different colors, with birthdays and names filled in for each month. How cool!
Habit Trackers
Tracking habits visually makes them more real. You get to color in boxes, cross off circles, or check off squares. It’s so rewarding to actually see how you’re staying with your habits
Yes, I want
the playbook!
Mood Trackers
Plot your mood with colors, graphs, or sketches. It's part emotional insight, part art therapy. And sometimes, it explains more than words can.
Gratitude Pages
I’m big on practicing gratitude! Write down what’s going right. It’s easy to forget the good stuff when life is...life-ing.
Goal Pages
Dream big. Get it all out, and then map the actions it takes to get there. Goals become way less overwhelming when you can truly see them.
Reflection
These are the pages where you write how you're doing. What worked. What didn’t. What you want to leave behind and what you’re taking with you.
Journal Pages Layout Tips
Even if you’re not naturally artsy, your layout still plays an important role. A good layout makes your page more readable, more usable. Here are some layout ideas in case you're looking to try something new.
Grid or Box Layouts
Use evenly spaced boxes to organize weekly planning, habit tracking, or misc journal entries.
Column Layouts
Split the page into halves or thirds to separate tasks, notes, reflections, or categories.
Circular Trackers
Create pie charts or wheels to visually track moods, habits, or progress throughout the month.
Timeline Layouts
Lay out your day or week chronologically using a horizontal or vertical timeline for structure.
Sketch Corners
Add small icons or drawings in the corners of each section to make important areas stand out visually.
Bold headers, simple icons, and just enough flair can turn a plain page into something you’ll actually want to fill out.
Things to Keep in Your Journal Toolkit
I highly suggest that you keep an eye on your budget as you head to the craft store! But a few go-to tools can make journal pages way more enjoyable to craft.
- A notebook with thick, no-bleed pages
- A black fine-tip pen for outlining
- Colored pens or highlighters
- Washi tape for sectioning off areas
- A ruler (I’m not gifted to draw straight lines freehandedly)
- Stickers or stencils
Now, it’s one thing to have fun with arts and crafts life we did in elementary school. Am I the only kid that wanted to know what glue tastes like? But a journal only works when it has a clear purpose, enough space to write, and a layout that makes things easy to follow.
Go with a design and style that keeps you coming back to it. Minimalist or maximalist, it’s your call. Just use tools that make you want to open your journal.

Journal Pages Recap
Create layouts that fit your life, not the other way around. Whether it’s something that Martha Stewart herself would be proud of, or it’s bare bones, your journal pages are whatever you want them to be.
And if all else fails, at least you’ve got a new reason to buy more pens.
Happy journaling my friend!
