I love going on vacation! I mean, who doesn't? Especially that feeling when you’ve finally arrived, woohoo!

I love that vacation comes in all shapes and sizes. I’ve been to beaches, deserts, lakes, mountains. My most recent vacation was to a Dark Sky Park. Oh my goodness, what an experience!

In case you don’t know what that is, it’s a vast area basically out in the middle of nowhere. It’s far away from any city lights so you can look up at the night sky…and see the stars.

So after nightfall, I went outside and waited for my eyes to adjust to the intense darkness. And then I looked up.

Whoa…

I always love being able to spot Orion the Hunter wherever I am. After all, it’s known for being one of the most recognizable constellations. But here, there were sooo many stars. I couldn’t identify ANYTHING.

It was unreal and breathtaking. There were shooting stars. There were clusters of stars. There were satellites moving across the horizon. I just stood there with my mouth open, astounded by the night sky performance above me.

I’m no astronomer or professional photographer by any stretch of the imagination. But I came prepared! I did a little research beforehand on how to capture pictures of the night sky on my phone’s camera. It took a bit of trial and error (and some encounters with a family of roaming deer out looking for their midnight snack), but it finally worked.

I got the photo.
