We made it to summer, wahoo! But between the cookouts, road trips, kids out of school, and that ever-growing list of “things we'll do when it warms up”… the whole summer can slip right through your fingers.

Before you know it, August shows up and you're wondering where June went. Yikes!

You deserve a dedicated place to place your thoughts while the sun's still high and the days are long. If summer tends to be a one big blur, journaling can be your way to live it instead of watching it all rush past you.

These summer journaling ideas I’ve put together are just for you!

The Perfect Opportunity to Slow Down and Soak It In

It’s kind of hard to explain, but summer has this funny way of being both endless and way too short at the same time. Things tend to move a bit slower (unlike the craziness of December).

It’s warm outside. And even if you're not a reflective person by nature, something about longer days makes you want to sit with your thoughts a little longer too.

Journaling lets you track all of this. It's one thing to think, “This summer’s been so good,” and another to ask, “What made it good? Who was I with? What will I want to remember ten years from now?”

You'll thank yourself in January when you flip back to your summer pages and can practically feel the warmth all over again.

Classic Summer Prompts to Try

Write About Your Favorite Summer Tradition

What's the thing that makes you go, yep, it's officially summer? Maybe it's the first trip to the farmer's market, a Fourth of July tradition with your family, or that one playlist you only play when the windows are down. Write about it. When did it start? Why does it still get you?

Your Favorite Childhood Summer Memory

Bring it to life on the page. What did the air smell like? Who was there? Was it a backyard sprinkler, a road trip crammed in the backseat, or a summer camp where you made your best friend? Be super specific. The more you track, the more it becomes a little time capsule you'll love reading later.

No budget, no time constraints, (and hopefully no sunburn)! What does your perfect summer day look like? Lake house with a good book? A solo morning walk before anyone else wakes up? A full beach day with the entire family? Let your imagination run wild here.

The Best Summer You Ever Had

Pick one. Why does it stand out? What was happening in your life? Who were you back then, and how are you different now?

10 Things Bringing You Joy This Summer

These can be super simple. The smell of sunscreen (if that’s your thing!)! An evening out on the porch. That one song that's been on repeat. Laughter out at the pool. These little things are doing more for your soul than you realize.

How're You Doing This Summer?

No, really. Are you well-rested? Running on empty? Excited? Lonely? Overworked? Whatever it is, write it down.

A List of Things You Want Before Summer Ends

Note that I’m not talking about a to-do list. This is a “feels list”. Patient, calm, rejuvenated. Write them down, then notice which ones you've already felt and which ones still need your attention.

What Has This Summer Already Taught You?

Not so much big life lessons… more on the lines of, where are you stuck? Perhaps a conversation with a family member that brought to surface something you haven’t fully processed yet.

Or a phrase that caused you to change your perspective. If it stayed with you, it's worth writing about.

3 Recent Accomplishments That Made You Smile

These can be anything! Maybe you finished a project you’d been putting off, or you finally that recipe you’ve been saving for months. Have I shared how much my caramel cold brews have revolutionized my mornings??

If it made you proud, then it goes on the list!

Daily Mood in 3 Words

Three words. Done. Sun-drenched, happy, overwhelmed? Tired, sticky, grateful? You pick.

Gratitude Snapshots

One thing you're thankful for every day. A cool breeze through your tent window. A sweet text. Juicy watermelon at the picnic.

Tips for Keeping Your Summer Journaling a Habit

Keep Your Journal Somewhere You'll See It

Porch table. Beach bag. Nightstand. If it's visible, you'll use it. Prefer digital? Give this journaling app a try!

Don't Wait for the “Perfect” Time

Even though I find that the pace of summer is generally slow(ish), it still flies by. Write while your coffee brews before the house wakes up. Or during that 15-minute window at the pool while the kids are occupied. Find those cherished pockets of time.

Tie It with a Routine You Already Have

Morning coffee (cold or hot, either is acceptable to me). After dinner. Before bed. Attach journaling to something you're already doing so it doesn’t seem like one more thing.
