Woman reading a hardcover book in bed, wrapped in a cozy white blanket, wearing a striped sweater, fully lost in the moment and off the grid.

When I was a kid, I remember being so excited about summer break. There was a popular phrase that all the school kids would chant on the last day of school.

"No more pencils, no more books, no more teacher's dirty looks,"

I’m assuming that you’ve heard it. And perhaps you used to say it. Of course I chimed in too because…why not? All the other kids were doing it! Now I wasn’t the kind of student to get dirty looks from teachers...but I digress.

That phrase is a classic rhyme and it’s been around for ages. But I disagreed about the “no more books” part. For me, summer break meant I could read as much as I wanted to!

The local library where I grew up had a summer reading program where all the kids got a “treasure map” filled with a list of books to complete summer. Because at the end of the summer there was…a huge ice cream sundae party. Woohooo!!

And as we got through more and more books, we got to select more and more toppings that would be on our sundae. It was like a summer full of adventure. And every time it was oh so glorious! What a great way to encourage kids to read more.

I’m still yet to see something like this for adults. Maybe the lack of ice cream sundae parties is the reason why most adults don’t read nearly as much as kids do? I dunno.

Either way, that’s what inspired me to write this post about reading more. Sharing short quotes about reading is something that we can all digest (no pun intended) and at the same time encourage us all to read more.

That’s what makes quotes about reading so compelling. They’re compact. They’re succinct. And they pack a punch (not literally, because that would hurt).

Reading More Is a Good Thing

The purpose of reading isn’t just to check off another title from your list. At least I hope that’s not the case!

When you read, you encounter new thoughts that make you see things differently. That can be a bigger perspective or just a clearer one.

When a quote hits the spot, reading feels less like a task and more like something you want to do over and over again. And when you read more, you want to understand more. All good things!

The right line can be enough to get you going.

Just the arrangement of a few words might get you curious about a topic you never cared about before. Or maybe it just gets you back into the habit of reading, not because you’re supposed to, but because you want to. Huzzah!

I’ve actually started and completed books in just a few hours and all it took was a few impactful phrases to point me in a new direction. So no, not every book you read has to be a 1000-page novel to change something in your life. If you’re looking for some inspirational words to read more, then this post is just for you.

The Best Times for Short Quotes About Reading

Whenever reading starts to feel like a chore or you’re feeling a little off track. It’s easy to lose that reading momentum.

Life gets busy, to-do lists pile up, and suddenly that book you were sooo excited about is just gathering dust on the coffee table.

A few solid quotes about reading can get you re-centered. You don’t have to force yourself to read, rather think on why you even wanted to start the book in the first place.

Or maybe you glance at some quotes before starting a new book, just to get into a better headspace. That’s when the right words can help you focus on the words you’re about to soak up.

Perhaps you return to one mid-slump. Like when you’ve opened the same page three times or four times and still haven’t made it past paragraph two.

You can also add them into your journaling or when you're mapping out what you want to learn or focus on next. And if you’re talking books with a friend, sharing a quote that stuck with you can open up what’s been sitting on your mind.
