Cozy autumn scene with a journal and warm drink, showing why November deserves its own journal

I’ve always thought November gets a little short-changed. Everyone’s either stuck in Halloween-overload from October or racing full speed ahead towards Christmas.

Or it’s all hands on deck for how to outdo last year’s Thanksgiving spread. Ugh, it's not a competition!

Meanwhile, the rest of November is just kinda… there. Honestly, I kind of love that about it. It’s like the middle child of the calendar year, often overlooked yet so full of value.

For me, November makes me want to light a pumpkin spice candle in every room. It’s a great time to slow down a bit and look back at the year so far and still get more done before New Year’s Eve.

November has its own groove, its own beauty, and its own opportunities for reflection and planning. If you’ve been looking for journal ideas, this is your cue to pour something warm, grab your notebook, and cozy up to the amazingness of this in-between month.

Why November Deserves a Journal of Its Own

I view November as a time of transition, and that’s why it’s one of the most powerful times to journal, or even to start journaling.

For me things are bit quieter in November. The weather’s cooling down and it’s not yet time for the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping. It’s the perfect backdrop for self-reflection.

Yes, the year is winding down, but it’s not over yet. And it’s hat “almost there” sense that gives you a chance to reassess your goals without the pressure of January resolutions.

Of course Thanksgiving puts gratitude on the calendar, but November as a whole gives us 29 more days to focus on what we’re thankful for.

Leaves are falling away from the trees, the days are getting shorter and shorter, and mornings are cooler and cooler. What a great time for us to let go, just like nature is letting go.

November journaling captures all of this.

Journal Prompts for Reflection

One of my favorite things about November journaling is how reflective it is. It’s so helpful to look back on things before moving forward. Here are some prompts to help guide those reflections.

What lessons have you learned this year that you don’t want to forget?

Write about the people, places, or experiences you’re most grateful for this month.

Describe how November is for you emotionally…is it calming, nostalgic, invigorating?

Capture one ordinary thing of your day that’s meaningful right now.

How have you grown since last November? What’s different about you now?

This is where your journal becomes a snapshot of who you are right now, before the holiday craziness sweeps you up.

Journal Prompts for Planning

When I think about it, November is also a really great month to plan. Not in the “New Year, New Me” kind of way, more like taking stock of where you’ve been and where you need to be before the year wraps up. Check out these prompts to guide your planning pages.

What do you still want to finish before this year ends?

Write down three priorities for November that support your bigger goals.

What habits do you want to carry with you into (or get rid of by) the new year?

How can you use November as a buffer month to reduce December stress?

Setting November Goals

If January is for big-picture dreaming, then I think of November for setting focused, realistic goals. It’s like a checkpoint so that you can still make meaningful progress where you need to. Hitting small goals now can be a huge accomplishment because they carry you smoothly into January.

Use November to review your yearly goals. Which ones are done, which ones are still relevant, and which ones you’re happy to release?

Create mini-goals for November. For example, read one book, complete one project, or try one new thing that excites you.

Choose one area of life to focus on this month (e.g., career, creativity, health, or relationships).

Write about how you want to maintain momentum without burning yourself out.

Seasonal Inspiration for Journaling

One of the things I love about November journaling is how the season itself becomes part of the practice. Your journal can be both reflective and creative, blending words with the sensory aspects for this time the year.

The weather…write about the changing light, colder mornings, or the smell of crisp leaves.

Rituals…journaling with a warm drink (coffee is always my go-to), a favorite sweater, or by candle adds to the experience. And no, it doesn’t have to be pumpkin-scented.

Creative touches…add pressed leaves, doodles of bare trees, or mood boards in your journal.

Imagery…foggy mornings, early sunsets, and chilly walks all convey November’s mood.

Gratitude Journaling (Beyond Thanksgiving)

Gratitude is everywhere in November, but I like to take it beyond the holiday. Try these ideas.

  • Dedicate a page each day to something you’re grateful for. Big or little, it all counts.
  • Write about challenges that made you stronger this year…gratitude for growth.
  • Note traditions or family rituals that are important to you.
  • Write a “gratitude letter” to someone (you don’t even have to send it).

Reflecting on Change and Transition

As I noted earlier in this post, November is nature’s way of showing us how to let go. I view it like a mirror for our own transitions.

How do you usually handle change in your life?

What endings this year are giving way for something new?

In what areas of life do you need to slow down instead of pushing ahead?

Your journal becomes a safe place to unpack these questions. Sometimes just writing the words helps us to start letting go.

Looking Ahead to December and the New Year

While November deserves to stand on its own, it’s also a great time to look ahead. Journaling this month can prepare you for what’s next without the stress of all that January pressure.

Write out your intentions for December that keep the holidays joyful instead of overwhelming.

Brainstorm how you want next year to look. What themes, goals, or even a “word of the year” comes to mind? (*I already have mine!*)

How can you carry the calm of November into the busy season?

Who in your life do you need to reconnect with?

Think of it as tying up loose ends while planting seeds for the new year.

Make Journaling a November Ritual

The key to journaling in November is to make it something you actually enjoy. You don’t need to fill pages every day or follow strict rules. Instead, focus on creating a ritual that’s enjoyable.

Choose a specific time of day (morning with coffee, evening with decaf coffee). Keep your journal somewhere inviting, on a bedside table, near your favorite chair.

Use November themes, like warm colors and fall stickers. And if you prefer the digital route, go with a journaling app.

November Journaling FAQs

Why journal in November specifically?
November is a natural time to reflect, practice gratitude and plan ahead. It sits between fall and the holidays, so it is a great moment to pause.
Do I have to journal every day in November?
No. A few minutes several times a week works well. Choose a rhythm you can keep up without guilt.
What should I write about if I only have five minutes?
Pick one prompt, such as what you are grateful for or one goal for the month, and answer it in a few honest sentences.
Can November journaling help me prepare for the new year?
Yes. Looking back on what you have learned and setting small, realistic goals now makes December and January feel much lighter.

A November to Remember

November is a month of reflection and gratitude, and it’s the perfect time to start journaling. So settle in with your notebook and let November stand on its own. It has way more to offer than we give it credit for.
