For me, Thanksgiving is more than chowing down on turkey, mashed potatoes, and pie (although yes, the warm pecan pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream plays a huge role).
It’s one of those holidays that inspires me to look around at the people in my life I love dearly and am grateful for. A Thanksgiving filled with gratitude will have more of a lasting impact then how moist I can make my favorite cornbread recipe.
And while the food we share is often the focus, we can make words we share take center stage. A simple phrase, a thoughtful quote, or even a short message can share what’s on our hearts.
Keep reading on and you’ll find plenty of Thanksgiving quotes and sayings to bring a little extra meaning to your holiday this year.
Thanksgiving Sayings
These are short, catchy phrases you see everywhere this time of year. On kitchen towels, holiday cards, Pinterest boards, and sometimes even as captions under someone’s pumpkin pie photo. They’re like little snapshots of gratitude or humor.
Examples of Classic Thanksgiving Sayings
Some sayings have stood the test of time because they’re simple and heartfelt. Here are a few of my favorites.
“Give thanks with a grateful heart.”
“There’s always something to be thankful for.”
“Gather here with grateful hearts.”
“Eat, drink, and be thankful.”
I’ve seen these on wooden signs at family homes or printed on dinner napkins. They’re like a warm hug, even if you’ve read them a hundred times.
Fun and Modern Twists
Of course, not everything has to be serious. I believe the Thanksgiving dinner should be filled with table laughter, and some modern sayings reflect that side of things.
“Leftovers are for quitters.”
“Stop, drop, and pass the rolls.”
“Calories don’t count today.”
These are the sayings I’d throw into a group text. They add lightness to the day so that we don’t take everything so seriously.
Where to Use Thanksgiving Sayings
Sayings are versatile and can be used in so many creative ways. You can print them on place cards for the dinner table, use them as Instagram captions, add them to chalkboards or framed signs around the house, or even slip one into a thank-you card for a hostess.
I think they’d be great for sprinkling into social media posts this time of year.

Happy Thanksgiving Quotes
Quotes stand the test of time. They give us words that have been spoken by poets, leaders, writers, or thinkers, and they still resonate today. For me, quotes often capture feelings I can’t quite articulate on my own.
Inspirational Quotes About Gratitude
When I think of Thanksgiving, I immediately think of gratitude. These are the quotes that stick with me.
“Gratitude turns what we have into enough.” - Aesop
“The roots of all goodness lie in the soil of appreciation for goodness.” - Dalai Lama
“When we focus on our gratitude, the tide of disappointment goes out and the tide of love rushes in.” - Kristin Armstrong
Any of these would be great for journaling, in thank you cards, or even said out loud before a meal. They never get old!
Heartwarming Family-Focused Quotes
Family is another major theme of Thanksgiving. Even if things aren’t perfect (because no family is), there’s something about this holiday that makes us appreciate the people who are there for us year after year.
“The family is one of nature’s masterpieces.” - George Santayana
“The love of a family is life’s greatest blessing.”
“Family is the heart of a home.”
Lighthearted and Funny Quotes
Sometimes, we all need a good laugh and to lighten the mood. Here are some quotes that do that.
“After a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one’s own relatives.” - Oscar Wilde
“The thankful receiver bears a plentiful harvest.” - William Blake
“What we’re really talking about is a wonderful day set aside on the fourth Thursday of November when no one diets. I mean, why else would they call it Thanksgiving?” - Erma Bombeck
These are the quotes I’d use for a toast if I wanted to make people smile
How to Use Thanksgiving Quotes
Quotes can work in so many ways, and I’d recommend using them wherever they’ll bring a little extra meaning to your holiday.
Add one to a Thanksgiving toast or blessing, tuck it into a holiday card, or share it on your Pinterest graphics and Instagram stories. You can even use a favorite quote as part of your table decorations.
Thanksgiving Messages
So...what’s the difference between sayings, quotes, and messages? I’ll explain! Sayings are short and catchy, quotes are borrowed words of wisdom, but messages are yours. They’re how you express your gratitude directly to the people you’re thankful for in your life.
Writing a Meaningful Thanksgiving Message
When I write Thanksgiving messages, I try to keep a few things in mind:
- Make it warm and genuine.
- Mention something specific about the person (so it’s personal).
- Tie it back to gratitude or Thanksgiving in some way.
Examples of Thanksgiving Messages
For Family and Friends
“Happy Thanksgiving to the ones who make my life so full. I’m grateful for the laughter, the love, and the memories we’ve created together.”
“Wishing you a day filled with food, fun, and family. Thank you for being the heart of my world.”
For Coworkers or Clients
“Grateful to work with such an incredible team. Wishing you a Thanksgiving filled with success, joy, and of course, amazing food.”
“Happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for the collaboration and support this year. May your holiday be restful and full of gratitude.”
For Social Sharing
“Happy Thanksgiving! May your plates be full and your hearts even fuller.”
“Grateful for the people who make life brighter every single day. Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving!”
Creative Ways to Share Messages
- Write a handwritten note and tuck it into a guest’s place setting.
- Send a group text with a heartfelt message (I’ve done this when I couldn’t be with my family in person).
- Share one on Instagram with a candid family photo.

Stuff Your Heart, Not Just Your Plate
The food will get eaten, the dishes will get washed (…eventually), and the day will come to an end. But the things we say linger long after the holiday is over.
Sayings keep the holiday light and festive. Quotes give us perspective and wisdom to carry forward. Messages let us connect directly with the people we love. Together, they make Thanksgiving complete.
So as you sit down this year, be reminded that food feeds the body, but words of thankfulness feed the soul.
