You said yes to hosting, you’ve got a date marked on the calendar, and maybe you even have a theme going. Woohoo!
Now comes the part that your guests are going to absolutely expect when they arrive. Food!
Who wants to go to a party and not eat? Not me!
So, I’ve got good news for you. Summer party food can be oh so simple AND oh so yummy. Some of the best stuff I've ever eaten at a party was quickly thrown together in minutes by someone in flip flops...
The secret is in knowing what works, what people want (and expect) to eat, and what you can pull off without missing your own party.
Here's my go-to list of summer party food ideas that you and your guests will enjoy. Best of luck narrowing it down to two or three items!
Summer Party Snacks That Disappear in Minutes
Let's start with the stuff people grab before they even say hi to you.
A ridiculously good fruit board. I'm talking watermelon, berries, mango, maybe some tajin on the side. Arrange it on a big cutting board and watch it vanish. Minimal effort, maximum wow factor.
Pimento cheese dip with crackers and veggies. If you haven't tried pimento cheese at a summer party, you haven’t lived! (Ok, I exaggerate sometimes). Make it homemade or grab a good store-bought tub. No one will judge.
Caprese skewers. Cherry tomato, basil leaf, mozzarella ball, drizzle of balsamic. They take minutes to assemble and look like you tried way harder than you did
Chips and a mango salsa. Fresh mango, red onion, cilantro, lime, and jalapeño if you're feeling spicy. Delish!
Everything bagel pinwheels. Cream cheese, everything bagel seasoning, rolled up in a tortilla, sliced into little rounds. So simple, yet weirdly addictive.
These summer party snacks are the kind of thing you can prep the morning of (or even the night before) and then set out when your guests start arriving. No hovering over a stove required.
Main Courses Worth Building Your Menu Around
This is the centerpiece, your main item to fill those tummies. Make it good!
Burger bar. Set out the patties (beef, turkey, or veggie) and let people DIY their own. Put out all the toppings: pickles, caramelized onions, jalapeños, different cheeses, special sauces. It's interactive and everyone gets exactly what they want.
Grilled chicken skewers with peanut sauce. Marinate the chicken overnight, skewer it, then grill it. Warning: your guests might ask for the peanut sauce recipe (even if you really bought it from the store)!
Street corn tacos. Grilled corn cut off the cob, mixed with mayo, cotija cheese, chili powder, lime. Pile it into small tortillas.
Pulled pork. I never thought I was a slow cooker pulled pork fan…until I had some at a summer party. Oh man, it was sooo good! Get some slider buns, BBQ sauce, and a couple slaw options on the side.
Make-your-own flatbreads. Set out store-bought naan, a few sauces, cut veggies, cheeses, and let your guests go at it. Pop them on the grill for a couple minutes. Fun and delicious.
For your summer party, no need to go overboard and have three main items. All you need is one great main and a bunch of snacks around it.
Yes, I want
the playbook!
Sides That Steal the Show
I’ll let you in on a secret. It’s often that the sides (and not the main dish) are the real reason I go back for a second plate!
Classic coleslaw with a twist. Add some apple cider vinegar and a pinch of celery seed to yours..
Grilled corn on the cob. Butter, salt, maybe some herb butter if you're feeling fancy. You literally can’t go wrong with corn on the cob as a side!
Pasta salad. The kind with Italian dressing, cherry tomatoes, olives, pepperoni, and little cubes of mozzarella. You can pick this up from pretty much any grocery store’s deli section.
Baked beans. I know...super simple. But add some brown sugar, a little mustard, maybe some bacon, and suddenly it's everyone's favorite thing on the table.
Watermelon feta salad. Cubed watermelon, crumbled feta, fresh mint, squeeze of lime. It sounds weird if you haven't tried it. Then you try it and wonder where it's been all your life.
Drinks to Keep Things Fun
No summer party food spread is complete without something cold to wash it down.
A big batch cocktail. Sangria, margaritas, or a spiked lemonade in a big drink dispenser.
Flavored water station. Cucumber mint, strawberry basil, lemon lavender. Sounds bougie but it's really only fruit in water. And guests love it!
A cooler full of seltzers and sodas. Not everything needs to be fancy. Sometimes a cold La Croix or a root beer is exactly what someone wants.
Frozen lemonade. Blend lemonade with ice and a bit of frozen fruit. A great choice for kids and for adults.
TIP: set up the drink station away from the food. It spreads out your guests out and helps with traffic flow.
No-Bake Desserts
Now on to desserts, my favorite food-part of any party!
S'mores bar. Graham crackers, chocolate, marshmallows, a little fire pit or tabletop s’mores maker. Interactive and nostalgic and everybody loves it.
Ice cream sundae station. A few cartons of ice cream, bowls of toppings, done. Let guests scroop what they want.
Mixed berry trifle cups. Layer pound cake cubes (store-bought to save on time!), whipped cream, and mixed berries in little cups. They’re adorable and taste incredible.
Frozen fruit pops. Grab a variety pack or make your own with fruit and yogurt. Perfect for hot days when nobody wants a heavy dessert.
A Few Tips to Make the Food Uber Easy
Prep what you can the night before! That might be cutting fruit, making dips, marinating meat. Morning-of you should be setting out...not chopping.
Use boards and stations
They do double duty as decor AND serving. A big cheese board, a taco station, a s'mores bar. They look amazing and cut your work in half.
Don't cook everything yourself
Make the main and one or two sides, then ask guests to bring the rest. Nobody minds bringing a side dish. So why not let them?
